Day 13 (MDC Work Day)

Today was the last day to wrap up all of our final work. We spent the morning finishing our book and then met with our partners for the case study project. In the afternoon it was time to rehearse our presentations and have our final seminar over the book we have been reading. During the seminar we talked about the importance of financial aid in the college decision and how important it is for a college to show interest in the student. We realize how important it is to not just be another number at a school but also be able to have an impact and be wanted within that community.

As we closed out our final seminar I had every person give me one sentence that best described what they have learned during this course. Personally, I feel like I am now more educated in my college search and have a better understand of how to look past just the "name brand" education.

Ashwin: I learned that finding the best college for you isn't as simple as you thought when you were younger.
Frederika: Don't try to make yourself perfect for a specific school. Instead, find a school that is perfect for you.
Maria: I learned that college is a business deal that you invest in. So you have to find the best deal for you.
Ilan: I learned that even visiting schools you don't like opens your eyes to the exact aspects of a school you don't want.
Emily: Keep your mind open about all sorts of colleges.
Kayley: Stay open minded even if you think you know what you want.
Justin: I had the opportunity to learn about the hidden functions of college admissions through the book we read.

Tomorrow we will be presenting our case studies to each other as well as finishing a movie about the admissions process. This will be an opportunity for all of us to reflect on what we have learned and seen through out this j-term. Overall, I believe we all learned a great deal about what we each need to look for in our future college as well as what goes on behind the scenes in an admissions office to ensure that we will end up in a college that is right for us. This j-term was full of fun and educational experiences and I would definitely suggest people in the future who feel clueless of about the college process take part in it.

Day 9 (MDC Work Day)

Hello College J-term, it’s Emily! Today is January 18th and we have 4 days left of J-term. Today was an open work day. This morning, the majority of our time was spent listening to podcasts, reading The Gatekeepers, and working on our case studies. At the end of the morning we were asked to answer questions about how the J-term is going which Mr. Awkward created. This afternoon, students will continue researching their assigned colleges. We will also be watching a movie towards the end of the day called, Mona Lisa Smile, a movie about the life of a UCLA graduate.  We are looking forward to next week and we will be returning next Tuesday for more blogs!

Day 11: University of St. Thomas

Today was our last college visit of the J term. We went to The University of St. Thomas where we started the day in the admissions office where they explained important details about the school and we filled out informational cards to get follow up emails. We then had a campus tour with a current student where we saw the library, rec center, chapel, etc. At the end of our visit we had lunch in the school cafeteria to have the most realistic dinning experience if we were students at the school. I really enjoyed getting to see UST because we pass by the institution so often so it was nice to learn about the school in more depth.

Day 2 (Galveston Community College)

January 9, 2018 Today our J-term group visited Galveston Community College. I went in to the visit with the idea that I didn’t really have to learn anything from GCC, and why would I want to come to a community college. I was completely wrong, and I can speak for the whole group when I say we were all pleasantly surprised. GCC is in the heart of Galveston, and is a great option for people who either aren’t ready for a full 4 year college experience, or are going to transfer their credits for common core classes, it is also a very affordable way for people to get an education. This community college offers great programs such as nursing classes, culinary classes and applied sciences. They have great facilities and have one of the nicest-looking pottery classes i’ve ever seen (view of the ocean). I’m really glad we got to see a different perspective of institutions, and how a typical college might not be the right investment for everyone. The people who gave us the tour emphasi
