Blog Day 6
Today we had the liberty of visiting the University of Houston at Victoria. We arrived at school slightly early, then took the hour and a half bus ride to Victoria Texas. Once arrived we met our tour guide, Tiara. She then gave us a tour of the campus which consisted of three main buildings, the Center, West and Northern. We got to see inside and learn about the buildings purposes, the functions of the university and what it's like to be a student at UH-Victoria. Following our tour, we were shown one of the dorms at which students stayed. There were three separate buildings for students, one for freshmen, one for sophomores and juniors and the last for upperclassmen. Each of these buildings was a converted motel or hotel so the rooms were of good size and were cozy. Our guide explained how the dorms operated, where and how students ate and the different class locations in relation to where they slept. Over the course of the tour, we learned what the universities environment is like, (small 1-17 student-teacher ratio) how to apply, annual tuition, student enrollment, scholarships, and financial aid and most interesting to me, the sports. We also learned that their student government was able to put in a new student center that should be active by the fall of next semester.
After our tour, we went and ate lunch at a local restaurant, burger nation. Following our delicious lunch recommended by our tour guide, we headed back to the university to meet with one of the professors. In short, she told us all about the importance of college, her favorite classes and how to be successful within the college. She told us not to let anyone tell us we can't make money in a subject we like but she also told us that our hobbies should stay different from our school interests, as to widen our horizons. She then went on to talk about how our school has given us a great head start into college because of our International Baccalaureate program, "You guys can probably skip to the more fun classes because of that" she said with a laugh. After our meeting, we went to our final talk of the day. This was with a couple of representatives from the student center. Here we learned a little bit about what the two of them did for the university. In addition, they talked about the disability program where if you had a disability you could speak to them about whether it was of physical or something different like test anxiety. Our day at UHV came to end with another hour and a half bus ride back to our in comparison tiny Montrose campus.
